Cat Sandbox is an adorable puzzle game where we use a variety of interesting tools to get our cat friend into a cardboard box.
The story of the game is that we’re helping a cat find its way home. To achieve this, we must beat dozens of levels that feature different terrains and unique tools that let us navigate them.
For example, some levels have us use land mines to launch our cat to the goal, whereas others let us use lava to burn away all obstacles. The twist, however, is that our cat stays completely still until we’re done setting up our tools – so we have to be very strategic as we cannot interact with the level after we press the “play” button.
From the pixel art style to the charming but repetitive music, the entire game has a retro Gameboy-like feel and atmosphere to it.
In physics-based games, puzzles often have multiple valid solutions. But in Cat Sandbox, some levels definitely rely mostly on random chance – or impossible precision. I’d argue this is the game’s biggest downside.
The controls work as expected, but it's often difficult to be precise enough on small phone screens, leading to a not-so-perfect experience.
Cat Sandbox is a $1.99 premium game. It's not too long of a game as long as you don’t struggle with the physics puzzles, but what’s there is certainly fun.
