The Last Game is an action roguelike dungeon crawler inspired by the indie hits Tiny Rogues and The Binding of Isaac. It’s a game full of tough decisions, items that create a unique experience in each run, and even local 4-player co-op.
Starting with a mage class, we clear randomly generated rooms and pick which of two doors to enter next. And since we’re told what reward we’ll get for defeating the enemies behind each door, we can strategically decide which to pick.
Like in many similar games, our character attacks automatically while we move it around to avoid incoming attacks. But we can also dash or place a bomb – if we have any in stock.
Once we defeat the tough boss at the end of each floor, we continue to the next, which always begins with an upgrade room with power-ups such as shields, an extra life, or a new item.
When we die, we earn souls depending on how well we did. We use these to unlock the many power-ups in each upgrade room, which allows us to claim them for free every time we reach that room again, creating a bit of permanent progression.
The best part, however, are the 90+ items we can acquire, many of which come with a trade-off. For example, we may gain 30% extra damage, but at the cost of our shots no longer firing in a straight line. Finding fun combinations of items is what I enjoyed the most about the game.
The Last Game is a $1.99 premium game without ads or iAPs.
It’s a fairly easy game to complete, but with several classes and five difficulties, it’s made to be replayed. With very little permanent progression, things eventually get repetitive, but it’s a great game to just boot up for some quick, good old fun.
